You don't really come across many voices that when you hear them have such a distinction from the other voices of singers nowadays. You also don't get as many soulful melodic voices anymore. But this beautiful Latina Storyteller has a voice that would gladly lead you right into the ocean!
I recently got put on but enlight everyone who is the soulful Dominican mami by the name of Sasha?
Sasha is that one person in your life you can always count on for a good laugh. I’m really as simple as black as white. I’m the class clown but also the protector of my people. I’m a leo so that says a lot about what character I carry.
Did you always have the same melodic vibe to you?
I have! And it’s funny because I always felt like people would either really love it or really dislike it. I felt like my voice wasn’t of this time. It was old school, it was jazz, it was blues with soul dashed into it. So my pocket is jazz but I love to sing soulfully without a doubt.
Tell me a little bit about how you got to the place that you’re in today
Well, I still have loads to do but for the space I’m in now. I really just have prayed man, I’ve been through at least 12 jobs knowing I never cared to work for anyone. I had the courage this year to be like you know what? I’m doing my music. I literally jumped off that mountain of faith in February. So it’s all happening pretty fast, and I just happened to be blessed with that repost that put me in front of the social world.
How did it feel to see yourself go viral for the Cardi B Bodak yellow cover?
Unreal. I banked on that cover for 1 week maybe and said to myself “this is going to be the one” because I have been covering songs and Making them my own already. That cover was the first cover where I kept the words but took trap and made it soul. And I didn’t even aim to make it the “Bodak Yellow” cover. I wanted something different so I took 3 other popular songs of trap and meshed it into one. Being that it was the clip that got reposted, that’s what stuck. And I made sure to do my homework to be the first one to do it over acoustic and I was. I studied on that hard before I did it. And a few other people followed the system and made noise too. Going viral was happening literally before my eyes. I posted it at 9pm and woke up the next day at 9:30am to go to work and my friends called it for me. I opened my IG and it was RIDICULOUS. I’m still in awe about it.
What do you plan to do to help female artist, how are you inspire other female letting us to know their worth?
Listen to yourself. Anything is possible with some work put in and some prayer. My last name is Campusano and “Sano” comes from there. It also means Supporting Artists and Originality so It’s def a movement I’m creating. We can’t progress without the help of one another.
Top Latina female artist you feel it underrated?
Would it be corny to say myself? Ahaha. But seriously, there’s no really underrated Latina artists because the ones I have liked have made their way.
Do you have a few places that you’ve performed at?
Oh yea. I’ve performed my first show this year for ChicPea’s anniversary down at the Harborside building downtown Jersey City. I have performed at Cafe Sole, Legendary jazz Establishment called BirdLand in New York along with The Drom and now I’m heading to Apache in Atlanta.
If given the chance would you like to work with?
No lie, Cardi B herself. I would love to work with Rihanna, Drake and Beyonce.
Well what advice would you give to others that are trying to turn their pain or past experiences into something beautiful?
To not be afraid. Being afraid pushed me back this long and the minute I opened up about it everything I could ask for started happening. My advice is to take the same logic.
What can we expect from you soon?
More shows and god willing my music comes out sooner than later. And then what would follow is merchandise. I have a site already called www.sashasano.com but I will add more to it and make it a platform people can also find my music.
