The best kind of arts come in different forms and when it comes to Jessica, she provides art for viewing and tasting but both are always eye pleasers. Balancing out art on canvas and making sweets that are equally as good to the eye may get hard but she gets the job done!
I myself have followed you for a long time but who are you?
I am Jessica Mata i'm an artist amongst many things, i don't really like to just say one thing for that kind of question i'm still trying to figure out who i am.
How long have you been painting and what made you transition into baking?
I've been painting since 2010 which is when i started college at Kingsborough community college. Tgen eventually i left school and just pursued my art, ever since then i don't think or would say i transitioned into baking its something that has always been with me or a part of me i just never really told a lot of people. it's just something i decided to take public and put my ideas and vision out there for others to feel connected to.
Would you say the skills you've obtained painting are helping you as a baker as well?
Yeah, definitely. i would definitely say i've taken on a couple of the skills that i've learned over the time of teaching myself to paint, it;s kind of the same thing you know. I'm a self taught baker as well, i like to experiment and definitely indulge in just a feeling of getting lost, putting your ideas in a very playful, creative where were people can taste it and they feel good. That alone makes me happy.
What do you feel is the hardest part of being an artist?
i would say the hardest part, for me at least is just trying to combine and accumulate everything that's built up in your mind for so long and try to spew it out in paint form. I create these pieces and i would literally walk passed it 1000 times not feeling right like its not ready yet. I guess i wait until the time is right, i mean it's just overall frustrating for me.
I've seen you make some vegan cupcakes, do they take a bit more time?
Yes, i do make vegan cupcakes. Actually at one point i was just making vegan cupcakes, i was gonna stick to simply vegan cupcakes. It's crazy because i'm not vegan but a lot of the people i'm surrounded by are and they do take a little bit more time. Only because its a little bit more of a science compared to regular cupcakes.
I absolutely love your artists column, how else do you think people would be able to support and uplift other artists?
I would say just by taking a minute, just taking one minute to just notice or look or glance at that persons work, whatever that may be. I know that my experience as an artist that meant a lot to me, just for someone to acknowledge my work, i think we should really push each other there's so many beautiful and talented people in the world.
Does it get harder for you to bake or keep things moving when your mind or mood aren't as positive?
it does. I'd be lying if i just said it doesn't because i'm only human at the end of the day, with a person of mental health this is something that becomes challenging when those two things aren't aligned it becomes really complicated you're a little bit less inspired and motivated to do the things that you love which is so crazy. Comes to show how crazy the mind is.
Any advice to other artists who may have taken breaks or not been able to get anything done lately due to their state of mind?
My advice would be just to keep pushing, i know the feeling of not wanting to get up and do the things that you love to do but it'll get better just keep pushing because at the end of the day no one can do what you can do. There's no one like you.
Anything you'd like to say or close this off with?
Just thank you, thank you for allowing me to just talking about this today and answering these questions you don't realize how much you've grown as a person and i see it, so thank you for that reminder. For all the artists and creatives out there don't ever feel like you're limited, that;s one thing i challenged with. Never feel like youre limited we can do so many things you know? That's what we were made for.
