Every group of friends needs a hypeman, every party needs the few people who get it jumpin for everyone else. If you hit the shows and parties in Jersey City, even the fundraisers you'd know one of the real lifes of the parties is Jay Hype!
Who is Jay Hype?
Well, i'm a 20 year old artist from Jersey City, NJ who just drinks tea and skateboards.
And how long have you been Jay Hype?
How long i've been Jay Hype? Since.. oh shit. It's been probably about 7 years. I got the name when i was like a freshman in high school.
How did you get the name Jay Hype?
Cause i used to, you know .. i used to just always be in sh*t and one time she was like dean of girls at the school i was at and she said every time that it was something going on, i would be like around it. She was like every time something was going on you're the cause of it, you'd just be too hype. So i was like oh that kind of just like it kind of matched me cause if you know me, everybody says that i just be like mad like hyped up all the time. So i just felt like it fit like it should just go.
Do you remember your first performance?
Yeah! i do actually, like my first performance as Jay Hype or just ever? My first performance as Jay Hype was at Ferris talent show, my junior going into senior year. I wasn't even in Ferris anymore cause i only went to Ferris my junior year, but it was like during the summer cause i remember that the talent show kept getting pushed back and pushed back and that was my very first performance.
Do you feel like it ever interferes with your music personally that you have A relationship with kanye? Does it affect my music ? Yeah.
i wouldnt, um.. do you mean in any way or like in a bad way?
Negatively and positively.
Negatively? No, it doesn't really affect my music at all. Positively? yes, because he gives me like hints, not hints but he gives me advice and he kind of guides me in a way. so it doesnt really affect me negatively. Positively, definitely though.
What are you trying to get out of the rest of this year?
Out of the rest of this year? well for myself, im trying to just get uh.. im dropping a EP at the end of the month so with that being said. I'm just trying to get like more shows and widen my fan base because i feel like growing my fan base is like the most important thing so maybe that's my biggest goal this year. Growing my fan base and growing it organically basically with that being said i don't want to like buy my social media presence or anything like that or i don't want it to be given to me. I want people to find me about me, you know like i said organically stuff like that, cause growing a fan base is really all i really need right now because i know like with my new stuff when it gets out to the masses its going to be something that could like touch people.
You also Dj whats that experience like for you?
The experience is pretty great i like to be able to cater to the crowd, and make them happy. So its A great all around experience.
Are you working with any other artist?
I'm actually not, there's nobody else on my EP except me. I didnt even mean to do it like that. But then i was already half way through it and i was like well f*ck it why would i throw a feature on now, you know. But i have worked with other artists outside of my EP though.
Who is your favorite artist so far that you've worked with, like who is the best time you'd say?
My bro Dougie F. Me and him i think vibe the best, we're similiar in a way, in the way we do our music and stuff and the way we go about our creative process so I think my favorite person that i've worked with him and then this girl Leaf, I enjoyed working with her.
You do a lot of the clothing drive events, is there anything else you plan on doing in reference to like helping out. Is there any other kind of events?
Oh definitely! Events wise definitely. I want to expand it from just a clothing drive to just doing drives over all such as toy drives, food drives and stuff like that. I just like to do things according to the season so that's why I do the clothing drive when the weather is changing. Cause i know people throw clothes out, they cleaning out their closets. I would do a toy and food drive around a holiday such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, when i know its really crucial for families and stuff like that. But definitely, i have more stuff in the works. I'm trying to expand it and taking it from city to city so that's the latest for all of that.
I know you're working on a clothing line, what's up with that?
You know, im working on it with my bro David, he is who i almost do everything with pretty much. David is from LA and my homie Stixz is from Maryland. She be helping me with sketches and stuff. She has her own clothing line which is called Rebel Native, that's pretty dope, but outside of them two thats who im really working with. Me and David do all the clothes and it started out with me just making things for myself tbh. Then with it being seen and everybody wanting to get on it , that was kind of like ight fuck it, we should just create a whole line. At first, i was just going to do regular merch like how artists do merch which is regular tour stuff and logos, stuff like that. We're going to expand it to like a jean jacket or like jeans, stuff like that. It's coming along, it's going good i just have to spend more time in LA to do it. I've just been in Jersey to finish my EP and i actually just finished it this past weekend, so now i have time to get back to LA and work on the clothes.
The yellow durag you've been wearing, what started that movement?
My bro Dougie F he makes music as well, also from Orange, New Jersey. It's actually the name of his next EP coming out called Yellow Durag, he just dropped a single from it with Kyle called "Homegirl".
Are you living in Jersey City or are you kind of bouncing around a little bit ?
I'm kind of, i'm bicoastal right now between Jersey and LA. I work on most of my music in LA though, most of my music was recorded either in LA or in my room.
Are you trying to work on any new shit with other people? not even like music wise just getting to the funk of like doing other shit.
Definitely, i want to collab with a lot of people especially on the clothing wave. Like i said my homie Stixz that has the clothing Rebel Native. We're working on a collab between our brands and i definitely want to do more collabs with brands for sure, Especially outside this music, i know i can do this and stuff. i just want to do a lot and collab with people on events, i want to collab with clothes, music, everything.
Where do you usually record when you're in NY,NJ?
When I'm in NY/NJ, I'm either in my room or work in a studio in Jersey City, but yeah I'm either in my room or there. i rarely record in the actual studio.
Are you thinking of working with anyone soon like music wise?
Oh yeah, for sure. It's a few people that I'm waiting to work with, a few people that's reached out to me. Man i just got people on my bucket list to work with and stuff, but i feel like you know, this year is going to be a good year for me so I'm probably get a lot of features outside Of Here.
How was working with 95Style ?
She was cool, she was chill. The fact that she was in the studio and didn't really like ruin my vibe is very important because studio vibes are very important and i can be cool with somebody, but still not like their vibe in the studio so she was cool. She came in and was very laid back and chill, she gave some you know feedback and stuff so i liked her a lot. She was cool. What is it that keeps you moving & keeps you grinding?
The inspiration is I know where i invision myself, where I'm going to go so it's more on how to get there. Getting to where i know where i need to be in my career, in life overall, all that inspires me. i know i want to get out of Jersey andlive in LA permenantly so its like i just got to do everything. You know im expensive myself, i like buying myself . I just got to work in order to supply the lifestyle . if i want to get there, i gotta put in work so thats what really inspires me, life as a whole.
What are the 3 places that you would say hosts the most events that are beneficial towards the youth, that are more dedicated to the youth event wise.
There's an open mic in Chicago that i want to say Chance The Rapper is in charge of but im not sure. The open mic in Chicago that a lot of my chicago homies go to that i feel like is very much for the youth. Yeah, i feel like that is very much for the youth, Also theres another event that goes on in Chicago that is actually my boy Amari, he does a bunch of events and their basically the Chicago Versiom of events like the BET Awards, The Met Gala in the Chicago, he calls it for Chicago for Chi basicallly. So all of his events are super good vibes, super for the youth. He's definitely about putting the city on, so thats two things and a third one that's for the youth. I would say Wolfjuice, that's the only person that i could think of right now at the top of my head. Almost everything that Wolfjuice does is for the youth to be honest if you ask me and my personal opinion.
What advice would you give to young artists, you're someone is very firm on getting their coins. You don't take that sh*t, you don't do that free bullshit, what advice or tips would you give other artist on keeping firm on that?
I feel like if you know your worth as an artist, you should never let anybody try to lessen your worth. If you know that you deserve this for your services, for whatever it may be that you do, Painting, singing, rapping, anything.. if you know what your work is worth and what your talent is worth then you need to stick to it because people are going to try to get you to budge and try to get you to, of course yeah everybody wants discounts, favors and everything like that but if you stick to it thats when people will see this is serious then they start to treat you like a professional. Basically being a professional plays out, you will see who's real around you, reals will be recognized. you should be given this for your talent for creativity and people that are not are the ones that try to get you with favors and get you to hit them with the discount ratings and stuff like that. i just feel like you should stick with it and it will show you. it will open your eyes to a lot.
Where have you performed, how many places have you performed at?
Besides obviously NJ/NY. Uh Chicago, LA, Miami, damn i did do rolling loud last year, that was my biggest performace to date. The rolling loud festival in Miami.
What would you say is your best performance ?
my best performance, i would say was my last performance last month for Chicago and i think that might have been my best performance to date. There's these guys that they throw these events and its called The Next Wave Chicago. basically It's like these cool kids that throw these parties and they have people perform and let me come on and like i said my boy Omari plugged me and they let me come in and perform and Chicago is actually my favorite place to perform because im like 2 for 2 over there. The first time i performed they super didnt know me and showed wild amount of love. The second time, some of them knew me some of them dont, but they still showed. Chicagos love is like unmatched out of all the cities ive performed in.
