Who is ki?
i'm basically just an overall artist, i paint, make clothing, music. It's all about self expression, so for me i'm just a regular person, i just like to create and make sure that i can gt my stroy out there and help other people that are going through the same thing.
And what does 7triiibes represent?
7triiibes to me and the family, 7 triiibes represents the soul of the planet, basically the 7 represents god, triiibes being a family, the three eyes representing consciousness, third eye and mind, body and soul and the connection we have with that and each other. so it literally creates the enlightened family of truth. We use 7triiibes as a family to express ourselves so that, its a healing process you know? expression, self expression is the healing process, it helps us to express and speak about what we're going through everyday. The planet that we're involved in and what we see, at the same time being able to teach and learn from ourselves and other people. It's a beautiful thing.
When did you get into music?
wow that's crazy *laughs*, music is something newer to me. I was painting and drawing and doing clothing my whole life but the music came later. I did that about 4 years ago.
You're into your crystals and your third eye is as open as can be what brought you to that point?
Honestly if anybody knew me before any of this i was a totally different person 100% and being around the people i was around and doing the things i was doing and living how i was living it wasn't producing positive outcomes in my life. I was going through really horrible things and i couldn't keep living like that. I felt like if i kept living like that i was gonna die, so i had to make a huge change. It was the time where my mother was in jail and she came home and sent me away to collect myself. That let up to me noticing and realizing things about myself that made me think "i can't live like this anymore, i can't treat people like this, i can't think like this, this is killing me slowly and i gotta change this now". So when i came back from Puerto Rico i just started tapping into a different side of me. I was reading a lot of books and doing a lot of research trying to find something to help me really appreciate a different kind of lifestyle. It also helped that my brother was already on it, he was vegan already at the time and he was on that and it came from Hip Hop. Hip Hop taught us that.
Who are all the members of 7Triiibes?
It fluctuated a couple times, we had 11 members at one time and now we have 8 of us. It's LiveHigher, Myself, Siva,Kast,EricTheRed,Above,Du-rag,BeHeard and PFlippa.
When did you guys become 7triiibes?
Actually 7triiibes we got together at the same time i started making music. I actually was making clothing, i'd paint on clothing and do all my other stuff and i did my art with an intention to send a certain message. I was doing shapes and colors and tried to activate certain parts of peoples sub conscious mind without knowing that they were learning positivity and progression about the world and i was like damn how can i do this in words, in other ways. I wanted to get it out further, i wanted to do music but not me specifically i had these people like the brothers around me, i had them around. When i met Kast he was like 14 and he was just freestyling never recorded a song in his life but i saw something in all of them. So i told them "guys you don't know each other but can i put you guys together we can make this music and send the same message i was doing with my art through the music". LiveHigher had told me he was down he'd do it but he needed me to make music too, from there it kind of just took off.
What do you want from the rest of 2017?
Honestly, i just want more progression, i feel like this year im trying to take what we do to a whole new level. We've been doing this by ourselves for 4 years independently , no help, no outside voices, nothing like that. This year i recruited a manager, I have a manager now i've never had a manager. So we are just trying to do something bigger, it's all about progression.
Have you ever collabed with any other artists on anything?
I've collabed with almost every artist that exists out here, i try to reach out to as many people as possible honestly. In the beginning more so, now i got reclusive i sit back and get the wave of everything that's happening around me. I tried to build with people and i tried to put people on game but i need people to be real if i like your stuff and you like mine keep it genuine, don't fake it just to have a connect.
The stone you sent me did you wire wrap it yourself?
I didn't make the gold wire wrap i just changed the rope that was on it. But the gold wire wrap i had gotten from somebody else. It was one of my friends from North Carolina, a brother of mine polo and a couple others they do stuff over there and send me stuff once in awhile.
You sent me 3 stickers recently can you tell me about them?
I sent you the 7triiibes sticker, WhiteBeardTaino, and the Monopoly Board. The Taino with the beard and the skull and bones in the back that's actually another brother that i'm building with now. We just recently met but we see so eye to eye on the planet and what we think and feel and about life and art. We just connected, thats WhiteBeardTaino, He has meds and when i say meds i mean like Erbs, like CBD oils and stuff like that. He does the whole Erb thing. The monopoly board thats my brother. I sent that to you because i felt like it was important for Jersey City Culture and stuff like that. He had painted that monopoly board down here on Grove ST.
what change are you trying to make to this world?
Honestly, my whole thing was just about inspiring like i said before what i went through, my personal life i felt alone. I felt alone, i felt scared, i was lost and i was really hurt. I don't want other people to feel like that, i felt like there was nothing out there for me. Then i found certain ways to go about it that helped me, i feel like if i give that back i can inspire people to be happy and seek a positive life and progression and life.
Who would you say your greatest influences are?
Oh man *laughs* Honestly i feel like a lot of inspiration locally, my brothers inspired me to do a lot of stuff. They were doing music before me. They were making music and they kinda super inspired me to get up and do things. I'm really big, like really big on Lauryn Hill, Eryka Badu, Andre 3000, Prodigy and Mob Deep for sure, I gotta say that because Prodigy just passed and his style influenced my whole style. Georgia Anne Muldrow too she's in my tops she's amazing.
How was working with Photographer @IamPandaParker for this interview?
It was dope we vibed out pretty much, we had a lot of the same interests and types of vibes. We went out to Liberty State Park first we shot some raw, natural looks. Something more directed towards where we were headed. I definietly enjoyed building with him, he definielty knows a little bit more about what we are doing now because i got to speak about what direction we were going in. He was cool, it was a good situation, a good vibe.
Can you give me 5 local artists you wanna shoutout for trying to put the youth on top?
That's an interesting question, trying to think who's out here because that's a crazy question. There's not many i feel like a lot of people use whats happening for themselves. I mean, Yourself man, i'd shout you out. You're one of the people but it's hard to think of anyone else there's people doing events and sh*t but it's not for US, its not for the love. It's for them and their pockets.
Are you working on anything new?
Yeah right now we're working on a lot. Like i mentioned before we have a manager now so she basically is trying to get us into a new space artistically. She's more industry, i love my independence i like being underground don't get me wrong but she's gonna get us to a new space. We're working on an album called "Still Speaking" which is a continuation of the first album we dropped in like 2013. I'm also working on a solo project, we're working on some concerts and stuff like that, community events. It's a lot there's so much to work on this year we are really doing more than we did in the past
You use to sell your music on tapes and i digged that, super wavy what led you to that?
What we represent as 7triiibes, real underground culture, it's for the Hip Hoppers and the people who appreciate music at it's fullest. We actually put out vinyl records too. We have casettes and vinyls and sh*t like that but i felt like i wanted to keep it true and organic, keep it funky. Do it one time for the raw, for the Hip Hop. They were super limited edition. It's dope that you can appreciate stuff like that, like you're amazing for that. I know there's people out there and people dont wanna see it but there's people that love music, art, that organic art they're not trying to see no boujee uppity sh*t. There's real lovers of art and i wanna talk to those people, i'm not talking to the other people that just want mainstream sh*t.
Is there any advice that you wanna give to the youth?
Don't allow anybody to stop what you're doing you have to make sure you go out there and get it done. Nobody can stop you but you so if you stop that's on you. Make sure that you go out there and don't listen to anyone telling you that you can't do it.
Is there anything you wanna close this off with?
At the end of the day it's all about love, it's all about building and making sure our community is right. We protect whats sacred, that's whats upmost to me. People will come in and try and invade on some Christopher Columbus sh*t and steal what we got and what we do and throw us in the dirt, Stay up and control your own sh*t don't let nobody infultrate. 7triiibes, Low down Lords, Bless up!
